Postnatal depression and how to get help

Post natal depression is more than the ‘baby blue’ many women go through the first few days after childbirth.

It is normal to feel tearful and down,two or three days after delivery. This is as a result of exhaustion and hormone surges and this is called, baby blues.

Post natal depression is however,longer and more serious in its effects.

SIGNS

-Conscious effort to put up a front to the world

-Tearful for no particular reason

-Desire sleep,and wake up unrefreshed

-Difficulty in sleeping

-Loss in the sense of time

-Never see the funny side of life

-Doubt your abilities as a mother

GETTING HELP

-Drug treatment with antidepressants. Some could be taken whilst breasfeeding

-Counseling or psychotherapy

-Social support and friendship

-Support and encouragement of husband and family
